HEAVEN UP IN HARLEM: AMY RUTH’S

After a night of drinking and debauchery there’s only one thing you want to do and that’s eat. If you’re in New York City you have a lot of choices at three in the morning whether you’re in the mood for diner grub or street meat. But how many times have you found you found yourself eating a gyro on the corner and just wishing there was a better option? Lucky for you there is. What if I told you that you could take a short walk or cab ride and be in food heaven surrounded by the most delectable Southern dishes you can find this side of the Mississippi? Well guys, such a place does exist and it’s called Amy Ruth’s. Located in Harlem this is bar none the best soul food you will find in New York City. The best part? On Fridays and Saturdays they’re open until 5:30 A.M. Who needs falafel off a hot dog cart when you can chow down on homemade fried chicken with all the fixings? Your eyes will light up like a kid on Christmas morning when you take a look at some of the entrees like smothered pork chops, pan-seared jumbo shrimp, bar-b-q chicken, catfish, and the list goes. No chicken or pork chop would be complete without some delicious sides and Amy Ruth’s makes some of the best mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and collard greens around. For some reason, good mac and cheese is pretty hard to find but Amy Ruth’s has mastered the dish as every bite is full of cheesy delightfulness. Another stand out item on the Amy Ruth’s menu is the waffles. These waffles are huge, delicious, and you can have them with any number of items including a boneless rib-eye, fried catfish, fried shrimp, fresh sautéed apples, and my personal favorite, cinnamon, fresh bananas, and pecans. I had you at boneless rib-eye, didn’t I? Well, there’s even more coming. You’re going to be stuffed after your entree, that I can guarantee, but make room for one of the ridiculously, insanely delicious desserts like the peach cobbler, sweet potato pie, banana pudding, and an out of this world red velvet cake that is rich and fluffy with a wonderful frosting. Wash all this food down with a big glass of fruit punch and you’ll be going home very happy. Amy Ruth’s is godsend after a night of clubbing or any other time for that matter. This is must eat food if you’re in NYC. Amy Ruth’s is located at 113 West 116th Street Harlem, NY 10026 and they can be reached at 212-280-8779.
