The Best Sandwich In Philly Isn’t a Cheesesteak

The best cheesesteak in Philly technically isn’t a cheesesteak at all but it gets lumped in to the same category. It’s the roast pork sandwich at John’s Roast Pork, a.k.a John’s Lunch, a.k.a The Snyder Avenue Lunch Bar a.k.a The Shack. John’s starts off with the freshest pork around and they cook it in a secret family recipe that’s been around since 1930 when the store opened. While the 84 year old recipe is kept quite secret, based on the taste, I would have to assume they marinate it in Holy Water blessed by the Pope and tears of joy from Scarlett Johansson’s eyes. Seriously, this thing is freakin’ orgasmic and after they pile a mound of the pork onto some awesome bread you have a choice between American cheese, mild provolone, or sharp provolone. Being from Brooklyn, I was a bit out of my depth so I asked for some advice. The extremely friendly kid behind the counter told me a million different ways he would eat the sandwich. In the end I went with straight up roast pork and sharp provolone. From the first bite, I knew why the kid recommended the sharp provolone. It gives the sandwich this delicious flavor that blends perfectly with the pork. It also melts as soon as it hits the pork and, seriously, what the hell is better than perfectly melted, yet not sloppy, melted cheese? At 6 bucks for a small and 8 bucks for a large, this sandwich definitely won’t break the bank either. To be honest, they could charge 20 and I would still eat it. If you’re there, you should be eating the roast pork, but if for some reason you don’t like pork (shame on you by the way) John’s has delicious sandwiches for everybody such as meatball, roast beef, Italian sausage, chicken cutlet, and chicken parm. They also have a tasty collection of cold hoagies, club sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, and they even serve breakfast if you’re the early rising type. And yes, before you Philly cheesesteak “purists” get all bent out of shape they have those too including cheesesteak, pizza steak, bacon cheesesteak, mushroom cheese steak, sweet pepper cheese steak, steak Milano, chicken steak, chicken steak Italiano, bruschetta cheesesteak, and pepperoni cheese steak. Enough cheesesteak selection for you? But, I cannot stress this anymore than I already have but I’ll try. If you’re at John’s Roast Pork, eat the roast pork. It’s one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten in my life. If you’re not from Philly, get there ASAP. If you are from Philly then just move in.
