JULIA ANN: MMD INTERVIEWS ADULT’S ICON

The term porn star is used too freely. If you’re a major league baseball player and you’re batting .171 you’re not considered an all-star. Just being a female adult performer does not a porn star make. It takes much more than that and the term should be reserved for those performers who deserve it, who have worked consistently and carried themselves with class throughout their careers. Who better fits this description than the breathtaking Julia Ann? Since the year 1992, Julia Ann has been on an uphill climb in terms of popularity. It’s not hard to tell why. She’s sweet, charming, and well spoken. It doesn’t hurt that she’s a gorgeous blonde with a great body who has many, many talents. Watch any of her scenes and you can see what those talents are for yourself. 22 years after entering the adult industry, Julia Ann has reached a level in the business that very few do. She is a certified legend, an icon. Mens Mag Daily was able to chat with this breathtaking blonde to discuss the changes she has seen within the industry, the pros and cons of being a contract girl, and how she has managed to have such a long and successful career.

Mens Mag Daily: Julia, you’ve been in the adult industry since 1991, is that right?

Julia Ann: Actually, I think it was 1992 but you’re very close. (Laughs)

Mens Mag Daily: Did you retire at any point or have you been active that whole time?

Julia Ann: There were a couple of times when I took maybe a year off but I don’t think I took any more time than that.

Mens Mag Daily: Wow, you must be one of the most veteran performers in the industry.

Julia Ann: Yes but there are others who’ve done it way longer than I have. Nina Hartley still performs and Ron Jeremy still performs. Sean Michaels still performs so there are people that have me beat. (Laughs)

Mens Mag Daily: You’ve been in the industry for a long time. Have you seen a lot of changes within the business?

Julia Ann: I think the changes I’ve seen have been the ones everybody has seen and most of them have to do with the internet. You have social media which has its pros and cons. You have the ability to get your opinion out there really quickly but at the same time people are able to get a hold of you really quickly. There seems to be this push for instant gratification. People text or Twitter and if you don’t get back to them right away you’re actually kind of in trouble. (Laughs) Back then, it was just regular post office mail.

Mens Mag Daily: That’s true. I mean realistically speaking, could a fan even get a hold of you before all of the social media?

Julia Ann: They could but it was snail mail. It took its time to get to us. There was no guarantee that we would even get it. Now it’s like, if you don’t answer them on Twitter they’ll Instagram you. If you don’t answer them on Instagram then they’ll email you. It’s like there’s no way out. It kind of reminds me of call waiting and answering machines. If you didn’t pick up the phone you would just get back to that person but once answering machines came along people knew they left a message so they’d get upset if you didn’t call back right away. (Laughs) Now we have cell phones so it’s like everything has to be instant now.

Mens Mag Daily: Is that annoying for you?

Julia Ann: Like I said, it has its pros and its cons. I just want people to understand that I have so many people trying to get a hold of me. And then on top of that I have my personal life, my friend and my family, so I have to cater to them as well. The problem is when you get a Tweet and you don’t get to it right away and then you look again and the same person is calling you a fucking bitch. (Laughs) It’s just like, give me a second. To be honest, the more people push, the less I want to answer.

Mens Mag Daily: Have you ever had any ultra creepy weirdo fans throughout the years?

Julia Ann: I’ve had people that were eccentric but I don’t want to call them creepy weirdo fans. I’ve had fans whose boundaries were a little skewed. They wanted more from me that I had to give and I think in this industry and this goes for actors or musicians too, I think people feel like they know you. Some people don’t quite grasp that it’s not real and they don’t really know you. They don’t realize that they don’t really have that intimacy with you.

Mens Mag Daily: So basically people think you’re supposed to be their best friend?

Julia Ann: I’ve had people think that we were going to get married. I’ve had people think that we had an actual relationship. I’ve definitely had some people who didn’t understand the boundaries and kind of lost touch with reality.

Mens Mag Daily: So you were a contract girl for a lot of your career and now you’re not right?

Julia Ann: I was under contract with Vivid, Wicked, and for a very short time Digital Playground. My last contract was 5 or 6 years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I loved being a contract girl and at the time that was what you did and it was the right choice. Now thought, let me tell you, I would have to be given one hell of a contract. I really enjoy the freedom that I have now and the diversity of the work I get to do. I love not having to jump through bureaucratic hoops to get things done. I don’t like being restrained anymore to be honest. I think that when I was under contract I wasn’t utilized the way that I wanted. Not being under contract has allowed me to really blossom and I think I’ve become more popular than ever.

Mens Mag Daily: I was actually curious about that. Are you more popular now than when you first started?

Julia Ann: Oh absolutely, I am way more popular now. My career is about consistency. I’ve always been consistent. The same goes for now and I seem to hit all the points. I’ve never been in a situation where I fit this one type of mold that’s “in” at a certain time and just skyrocketed to popularity. It was more of blondes are in so I work. Big boobs are in so I work. Whatever the “in” thing was I happened to hit it. I was really fortunate and now the MILF thing is in so everybody is throwing that at me. I’ve been really fortunate and it hasn’t been a situation where I’ve done really well really fast or vice versa. It’s been this gradual climb where things just slowly got bigger.

Mens Mag Daily: Does it ever annoy you when people call you an older woman? I mean you’re really not.

Julia Ann: When I was 22 if you would have told me I would be doing this at 45 I would have wondered who the hell would want to see me naked at 45. That’s what you think, right? When you’re 12, somebody who’s 19 or 20 is old to you. When you’re 20 then you consider 35 older. I don’t mind being called an older woman at all. It’s not like I have to have this soccer mom look. I can still be elegant and sexy. Look at Sophia Lauren. There are just absolutely stunning women out there that are in their 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. It doesn’t bother me at all. I do think the term MILF is lame because is stand for mom I’d like to fuck which isn’t sexy at all, it’s just rude. I kind of like the cougar thing, it makes us a little bit more stealth. It’s like we’re slinking around like a cougar. (Laughs)

Mens Mag Daily: Are you a cougar in real life?

Julia Ann: No I don’t think so. I mean I’m really easy going and laid back and I don’t think I’m aggressively searching for anything. I don’t think I’ve had to aggressively look for things; it just kind of gets thrown at me. I’ve been really lucky. (Laughs)

Mens Mag Daily: Did you just happen to stay this hot for this long or did you have to put a lot of work into it?

Julia Ann: First of all, I really don’t consider myself to be that hot at all. You can ask any photographer I’ve ever worked with, when I see a photo I don’t see the lighting or anything else all I see is me and I pick myself apart and think that I need Botox or I should have worn something different. As far as weight and stuff, I’ve gone up and down a bit recently but it’s just about staying on top of it and having my flaxseed oil and my almond butter.  I really do try to eat well. That’s not to say I don’t treat myself. I can binge with the best of them but I obviously can’t do that every day. I just schedule a cheat day once a week and it’s usually a Sunday because there are really good brunches and I can have a bunch of mimosas. The cheat day works for me because I can see something I want to eat and know that I just have to wait until Sunday. It’s not like I can never have it.

Mens Mag Daily: Do guys get star struck when they’re doing scenes with you?

Julia Ann: You would have to ask them that. A guy can’t really walk up to me and tell me he’s been a fan for twenty years because I’m going to be thinking that I’m at least 20 years older than him. (Laughs) You just don’t do that. You don’t really want to draw attention to that especially before the scene. Afterwards it doesn’t matter as much. I want the guy I’m working with to feel like talent, like we’re exactly on the same level but if he has that type of energy where he’s a fan it’s not really going to work.

Mens Mag Daily: See, that’s why I couldn’t be a pornstar among other things. I would be on my phone texting all my friends telling them that I just banged Julia Ann.

Julia Ann: (Laughs) See, if it was afterwards it would be cute, it just can’t be before.

Mens Mag Daily: So after all this time, you can actually say you enjoy what you’re doing?

Julia Ann: Yes absolutely, I’ve been really, really happy for over two decades.

Mens Mag Daily: Okay, so as one of the truly sane girls in the adult industry, do you believe porn deserve the bad rap it gets? Are women like you few and far between?

Julia Ann: No, I think people look for the girls that they can make fit their profile. Let’s take a homosexual for example. Let’s say you have a gay man who isn’t flamboyant you wouldn’t even know he’s gay so people look for the flamboyant homosexual so he fits the profile they want him to fit. They’re looking for what they want their gay people to be and people do the same thing with their porn actresses. It satisfies that tabloid aspect of their personalities. Nobody wants to talk about the pornstars who are going about their business, paying their taxes, and putting money in an IRA. That’s not fun. They want to talk about the one who accidentally overdosed or the one who got a DUI.

Mens Mag Daily: So you’ve always lived in California?

Julia Ann: Yes, born and raised.

Mens Mag Daily: I’ve heard California girls are very nice and friendly.

Julia Ann: I’d like to think we are. (Laughs)

Mens Mag Daily: I’m curious, what is your personal sex life like compared to your work sex life?

Julia Ann: It doesn’t last an hour. (Laughs) I would hate it if it always had to last that long. And it’s not planned out, like we don’t sit around and say missionary is going to be first followed by cowgirl and then reverse cowgirl. When you’re fucking in real life you’re not even going to want all those positions. If something feels good and they move you’re going to want to kill someone. I think one position is good enough. In my everyday life, I’m just enjoying exactly where I’m at.

Mens Mag Daily: Do you currently have a boyfriend?

Julia Ann: I do have a boyfriend.

Mens Mag Daily: Great, now you’ve just disappointed everybody.

Julia Ann: I know but honestly come on, I think not saying you had a boyfriend was like for those pretty centerfold girls. They couldn’t say it because it actually affected the perception. With pornstars, we’re supposed to be these slutty swingers anyway so what does it matter if we have a husband or a boyfriend? We’re fucking everybody anyway. (Laughs)

Mens Mag Daily: My readers requested that I ask you a question which I’m a little ashamed to ask but I’m going to do it anyway. What is your favorite sexual position?

Julia Ann: Missionary, I’m lying on my back. I like the guy on his knees and leaning forward and I love the eye contact and the fact that you can talk to each other.

Mens Mag Daily: Alright Julia, tell us about all the stuff you have coming up. It’s your time to plug away.

Julia Ann: I always have stuff coming out. I have a movie coming out for Wicked pictures. It was something like cougars and pool boys, it’s really cute. I’ve been shooting some stuff for Devil’s Films and I’m always shooting for Naughty America. I have my own site which is www.juliaannlive.com.
