Any sports writer or boxing announcer who ever compared Adrien Broner to Floyd Mayweather Jr. should seriously consider switching careers. A man blind in one eye could see that Broner’s fighting style wasn’t the result of sitting in a dark room watching fight film for hours with his trainer but an immature boxer emulating the style of the guy who’s on top of the game. The truth is, I’m not Mayweather’s biggest fan but the guy is a phenomenal fighter and dominates everybody they put in front of him. He’s a show-off but for the most part his whole shtick is a way to sell tickets and he respects every opponent he fights when all is said and done. Mayweather runs his miles and puts in the work needed to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Instead of trying to be like Mayweather in that sense, Broner takes Mayweather’s worst qualities, takes them to the next level of stupidity and makes them his own. Between rapping, dancing like a clown, and flashing money he doesn’t even have, when does this bum have time to train? The kid fought 25 creampuffs before he got to fight Paulie Malignaggi for the WBA Welterweight title. In standard corrupt boxing fashion the judges gave a fight that could have gone either way to Broner. You don’t give a champ’s belt away on a fight like that in his hometown especially when the challenger is a cocky overrated bum who pulled that nonsense with the chick Paulie Malignaggi was messing around with. Calling a guy ugly or a bum is one thing but when you invade your opponent’s personal life you’re way out of line. Malignaggi was robbed so badly that night, it was mind boggling. Not only was the man the reigning champion, he works for the network the fight was on. It wouldn’t take long at all, however, before Malignaggi and boxing fans the world over would get their revenge. On June 22, 2013 Broner would defend his title for the first, I repeat the first, time since winning the belt about five months earlier. His opponent would be Marcos Maidana, a solid fighter with some good power and a nice right hook. From the moment the bell rang the abuse began. Wearing a red leather skirt with the words “About Billions” emblazoned across the front, Broner began using his ineffective version of the Mayweather boxing style and was taking a fierce beating. Maidana didn’t even need a strategy. He was throwing wide haymakers and landing flush. This is the guy we’re comparing to the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world? In the time it took for Maidana to throw one of those wide lefts Mayweather would have caved in the side of his face and had time for a cup of coffee. And that was the first round. In round two, Maidana put Broner on the canvas with a wide left. Broner took more punishment in that round than Mayweather has taken in his entire career. Maidana, who was a 3 to 1 underdog, put Broner down again in the eighth. Maidana won by unanimous decision with the judges scoring the fight 115-110, 116-109, and 117-110. Due to Mayweather hunting down that 50th win, the rematch isn’t happening. Mayweather will fight Maidana instead and undoubtedly beat him while Broner takes on the hard-hitting Molina. Unless Broner has had a serious attitude adjustment he’ll fall to the power of Molina as well, meaning his second straight loss and for all intents and purposes the end of his career. And May 3rd is when it will all happen. So in conclusion, after his massive five month reign as champ, Broner further proved he’s a bum by being a human punching bag for Marcos Maidana. Is this the next king of the ring? Decidedly not. Not only is he not Floyd Mayweather, he’s not Shane Mosley and he’s not Zab Judah either. Due to politics and the geniuses that run boxing he was given the belt in his first tough fight because for whatever reason they thought he was something he wasn’t. This guy is a bum and his days as a “star” are over. Let’s save comparisons to the greats for young and hungry fighters who want nothing more than to be the next champion of the world. While they’re winning, maybe Broner can go rehearse some more dance moves. In the meantime, boxing commentators and reporters should think before they make comments that can’t be taken back.
