Vito Cammisano, the boyfriend of recently drafted NFL player Michael Sam has some serious….let’s just say it, balls, and it’s not just because he planted a big kiss on Sam in front of cameras. In most ways, Cammisano is your typical recent college graduate with one little difference. His family has connections to the Mafia. More accurately, his family is the Mafia. His grandfather was William “Willie the Rat” Cammisano Sr., former boss of the Kansas City Mafia who died in 1995 of lung cancer. How did he get that colorful nickname? According to a US Senate witness, the mafia boss earned his nickname “Because he killed people and stuck them in the sewers so the rats could eat them.” But it doesn’t end there, Vito’s uncle, William Cammisano Jr., is allegedly the current boss of the Kansas City mob. Vito’s father, Jerry Cammisano, also a gangster served time for his participation in a gambling ring he and William Jr. ran. For those who aren’t Mafia buffs, let me clear this up, Vito’s connections to the mob are about as deep as you can get, so deep in fact, that if he had followed in the footsteps of his father he could have been climbing his way up the Mafia ladder as we speak. Many may think this is news simply because of the people connected to the story, however, there is an underlying issue. The Mafia has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to homosexuality and one needn’t look too far for proof of that. John “Johnny Boy” D’Amato, the former acting boss of New Jersey’s DeCavalcante crime family (yes that is the crime family that The Sopranos are allegedly based on) was murdered when a scorned girlfriend of his reported to one of John’s mob associates that she had been to swingers clubs with John and that he had sex with other men. Action taken against D’Amato was swift. He was reported missing in 1992 and while his body was never found, his car was located with some of his blood in it. Despite Vito’s upbringing and connections, the fact remains that he is a civilian and will not likely face any repercussions for being a homosexual. However, I can all but guarantee that members of the Kansas City mob have some strong opinions on the matter. What I would give to be a fly on a Kansas City mob hangout’s wall right about now. As for Vito, he seems to have followed in his family’s footsteps as far as not taking crap from anybody goes and left the criminal activity at the door. Frankly, he seems like a great kid but we have not heard the end of this story by any means.
